Standing here, time and again, is simply overwhelming: the view over a sea of authenticity, uniqueness, individuality—qualities that no other product in the world embodies quite like wine. Right here, at one of the fault lines of the Upper Rhine Valley, where 20 million years ago sharks and corals once swam, tectonic forces crafted an unparalleled diversity of soils. Massive sandstone formations were built over geological epochs, gigantic slabs of earth were shifted as if by a ghostly hand, and entire layers of soil disappeared back into the depths. Over millennia, wind and weather have forged a remarkable diversity of “terroirs.”
With this sense of purpose, the 20-hectare winery founded by Inge and Egon Schmitt in 1978 has grown into one of the region’s most successful. Follow me to show you what “family tradition” means to us...
