About the winery

Where coal was once mined, wine now grows. Where the coal was excavated once stood the village of Wolkenberg – a place with centuries of history, whose residents were relocated in the early 1990s due to lignite mining. The houses disappeared, the streets were filled in, and only memories and archaeological finds preserved the life of the old village. Yet from this lost landscape, something new emerged in 2011: our vineyard. In the sun-drenched region of Lower Lusatia, on the former Welzow/Wolkenberg open-pit site, past and future meet. The geology and landscape history give each vine its own story. The vines root in a sparse end moraine of sand, gravel, and clay. These soils force the roots deep to access water and nutrients. The combination of sandy permeability, gravelly drainage, and clayey retention creates a terroir that imparts structure, tension, and minerality to every grape. Thus, our vineyard tells a story not only of nature but also of the place’s history – of loss, change, and new beginnings – connecting Wolkenberg’s heritage with the future of winemaking.
