The first documented mention of the Schönborn family's viticulture can be found in records from 1349, a written payment document that records wine from the Rheingau district of Winkel. Since then, the development of the Rheingau as a political and cultural centre has been closely linked to the Schönborn family.
The family's heyday between 1630 and 1800 also produced magnificent wines. A 1735 Johannisberger from the ‘Gräflich Schönborn'schen Eigenbau’ vineyard in the Rheingau was sold at auction in 1987 for DM 53,000. This makes the 1735 the most expensive white wine from Germany. The wine was tasted when it was uncorked: it was golden yellow in colour, clear and bright with a small amount of sediment.
Schloss Schönborn has a unique treasure trove of excellent vineyards in the Rheingau. From Rüdesheim to Hochheim, the best sites, where the estate cultivates around 30 hectares of vines, are strung together like a string of pearls
