Longing for the Unknown

How many places are still left to truly discover off the beaten path, places that satisfy the longing for the unknown? Mommenheim is undoubtedly one of these forgotten places – Jens Windisch found here precisely the kind of freedom for which he and his wines are so renowned.

Freedom of the Hinterland

This small wine village is located in Rheinhessen, along the state road 425. It’s just 13 kilometers in a straight line to Mainz, with the Zornheimer Graben and many field paths in between. The Rhine flows three kilometers east of Mommenheim, along the famous "Roter Hang" vineyard. Far enough away, in other words, to leave behind concerns about old traditions and fully enjoy the freedom of the hinterland.

Giving the Region an Identity

One person who grew up embracing this freedom crafts truly extraordinary wines here. Jens Windisch stayed to carefully tend to his family’s old vineyards. From the beginning, it was clear to him that he would vinify the grapes exclusively himself, giving both his wines and the region a distinct identity.
